REINIS ZARIŅŠ, piano
LATVIAN NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Conductor: ANDRIS POGA
Programme:
Sergei Rachmaninoff, Piano Concerto No. 2; Carl Nielsen, Symphony No. 4
The programme of this
autumn’s biggest concert of symphonic music will feature one of the most
popular musical pieces ever written for the piano: Piano Concerto No. 2 by
Sergei Rachmaninoff. In his music, Rachmaninoff is casting his glance across
the expanse of Russia. His Second Piano Concerto epitomizes the resurrection of
an author experiencing deep creative crisis; radiating beauty, it breathes
deeply and rises and falls in majestic waves.
The work by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen presented in Part Two of the
concert is similar in its scope. Subtitled ‘The Inextinguishable’, his
symphony, written during the First World War, speaks of unfading life force,
fundamental will for life and an impetuous vital spirit.
